Not by choice….but I’ve seen tons of videos of adults opening toy boxes! My kids love these videos, watching people play on YouTube! (You know these people get paid to do this – and much more!!)

Luckily for me, they don’t ask me to buy the things they see, but I’m sure a lot of parents are sick of it!

Goofy unboxing videos aside, YouTube has its uses!

I wasn’t taught much “useful” stuff in school (anyone still using triangles in everyday life?!), and I had to learn bits along the way. While my parents gave me a good understanding of how to change a fuse and do a few bits around the house, it’s not until you have a house that I don’t realize it. That I am lacking in some skills!

This is where YouTube comes in.

YouTube has tons of videos that show you how to do things. It can be anything from things you probably don’t use every day, like how to do Halloween makeup, to some really useful money saving lessons in life.

I’m not the only one using these videos – thousands, if not millions, of people are watching these videos to help save the need to call in a professional to do the job.

And why do people make these videos? It is not always out of the kindness of their hearts.

It’s about the money!

You can make money from YouTube videos, and if you have a skill that you can share on video, it’s a great side hustle to make extra money away from your day job.

Emily Wolden, a member of Second Dead Community Groupdid just that.

He told the community:

“So another little mission completed by ‘Ms single parent kick arse’ (also known as moi).

The headlights needed replacing and Halfords wanted £33 (including fitting). So I got fed up and went to Europarts Bulbs bought for £5.

Then it came to being a DIY mechanic. She went on to say:

“Found myself on YouTube and followed a step-by-step guide on how to do it.

“F*%?+{~ On removing the battery itself (yeah I’d be lucky every nut and bolt was gone and I didn’t want to move – but of course I have a knack for crap like that was the hand that did it)

“Changed the bulbs, refitted the battery and the car decided to refuse to start saying it had an immobilizer fault… So I go to my dear friend Google.

“Reset the BSI and BOOM – the car is working and all for £5 and a bit of elbow grease.”

How to hang wallpaper

Wallpaper can be an inexpensive way to beautify your home.

Although it sounds nice, how easy is it to hang it yourself without needing to call a decorator?

This video explains it well, and shows that you don’t need fancy tools.

Have you hung yours before? How was?

A few tips to get things right

Watching a video is one thing, doing it yourself is another.

Also think:

  • Be sure to watch the video in its entirety before starting your work. You don’t want to be halfway through a video only to find out you need a tool you don’t have!
  • Consider whether it’s worth trying to watch a few different videos to find one that suits your style. The videos above are simple and self-explanatory – for me – but may not contain useful information for you.
  • Whether you need to call on friends or family for some help. If the task seems too big for you alone, you can get an extra pair of helping hands in exchange for a cuppa and a few biscuits.
  • If you don’t feel really confident, don’t do it! While you can save money by doing it yourself, it could cost you more in the long run if you make things worse.

The thing is, doing it yourself is more than just saving money.

By repairing the stuff you own around the house, you’re helping to improve the environment too.
