Cheap Bean Spaghetti Sauce

It is possible to budget $150/month (2 adults in California) for food without resorting to food coupons.

. I usually do this by alternating between 3 or 4 different foods that also work as complementary ingredients – this avoids leftovers entirely. (See Chapter 5 of the book for a general idea). For example, bean sauce can also be used for tortillas.

Sorry, I’m biased against the type of food I buy coupons for. If the food is good, why would a coupon be needed to draw attention to it?


  • I can cook everything from soaking beans to cooking beans to making chutneys in a pressure cooker.
  • Ingredients
  • Sherry
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Black beans
  • Canned diced tomatoes.
  • Onion
  • Habanero chili pepper or similar.
  • Flour

Olive Oil


  • Spices: I recommend paprika, oregano, thyme and basil.
  • Things to keep in mind.
  • Make sure the onion is brown, not just translucent. This affects how well it stores and tastes.

Once it’s done, spread a thin layer of flour over it and stir it in to thicken the sauce.

You can chop the chili pepper and throw it in if you want it extra spicy. If you don’t throw it whole and cut it later for those who want it.


Adjust the ratio of ingredients to taste. Go easy on the sherry there
